Under the theme “Perpetual Progress – A Sustainable Future in View: Independence 42”, St. Kitts & Nevis hailed its 42nd anniversary of independence.

As he encouraged St Kitts and Nevis citizens - at home and in the Diaspora - to see every road as a pathway to opportunities and advancement, Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew said of nation’s journey: “It’s much like a road, built stone by stone, shaped by sacrifice, and guided by vision,” he said.

“As we celebrate this 42nd anniversary of our independence,” he went on, “we must also acknowledge that not every road is yet paved, not every project is yet complete, and not every community feels the full measure of peace and prosperity we seek. Today, we can say with pride that the federation is moving forward and moving forward together.”

During his speech, Nevis Premier, The Hon. Mark Brantley pic), said: “We must salute our farmers and fisher-folks who sustain our nation with food, our educators who cultivate knowledge and nurture future generations, our healthcare professionals who safeguard the well-being of our people and members of the police and security forces who ensure the safety of our citizens.

“Equally, those who operate in the hospitality industry, the performing arts, the financial sectors and our Diaspora who continue to contribute through their knowledge and remittances, we tip our hats to each of you. Indeed, you are our unsung heroes who continue to contribute immeasurably to the critical project of nation building, without seeking recognition or validation.

As people – young and old – turned out to witness the armed and unarmed forces, civic organisations, and students from all public schools perform precision drills during the March Past and Inspection of the Parade, the prime minister outlined various projects which have been accomplished, which include the expansion of water infrastructure, road rehabilitation, renewable energy initiatives, and other capital projects.

As they are now striving towards becoming a republic – and not be under the British Crown, St Kitts and Nevis gained their independence on September 19, 1983.
