With August 1st. marking the start of a new month, it also sees Jamaica, and Jamaicans around the world, celebrating the first of two significant milestones.
Marking the Caribbean nation’s journey to freedom and self-determination, the first is ‘Emancipation Day’ - which commemorates the end of slavery (in 1834) and so, it honours the ancestors who fought for liberation. A hugely powerful occasion in the country’s cultural history, the day pays an immense tribute to African heritage and history.
And then, with it coming at the very start of the month, it serves as a precursor to Jamaica Independence Day celebrates (August 6) – which will be acknowledging the 1962 break away from British colonial rule. So, the country is now striving on as it makes its unwavering commitment to self-rule and totally independent identity.
Happy Emancipation Day Jamaica!
