Almost 70 per cent of adults in Sandwell are overweight or obese say health bosses, who are keen to get people to sign up to a free health support service. Healthy Sandwell, part of Sandwell Council Public Health, says more than 1,000 people a month use its advice services but wants to help more people lead healthier lives. The team helps residents to quit smoking, lose weight, access NHS Health Check, get active and get the support they need for alcohol and drug related problems.

Since the service started three years ago, the number of people it has helped has tripled, but there are still many people who could benefit and NHS Health Check data shows 70 per cent of adults in the borough are overweight or obese.

“We want to help all people living in Sandwell feel great and be healthy,” says Councillor Preet Gill, cabinet member for public health and protection, “small changes now, can make sure people live longer healthier lives.

“Smoking and obesity are the leading cause of disease and illness in our borough, and while smoking prevalence has reduced in Sandwell, we have a growing obesity problem. Nearly 70% of adults in Sandwell are overweight or obese, but with great programmes running to help people lose weight and get active, we are committed to improving the lives of our residents.”

Healthy Sandwell offers free support to all ages, families and individuals to get people more more active, eating better and maintaining a healthy weight for good.
