September 4th is set to be the most popular day to get married in the UK and as wedding season draws to a close, top10casinos.com has commissioned research that illustrates how the typical 2021 wedding has played out in numbers.
The study of 2,000 people has revealed that in total, we have popped 92,364 bottles of champagne and have “cheersed” each other 52 times a day. Around 3,500 photos have been taken, including 1,008 selfies, averaging at a photo being taken every six seconds.
The average bride has tried on 16 dresses before finding the perfect one with 38% opting for solely online shopping, while 42% of brides have let their bridesmaids choose their own dresses this year. In addition, brides in the UK have taken three hours and 11 minutes to get ready while grooms have taken just 26 minutes.
The all-important best man speech lasted three minutes and 38 seconds on average while the first dance lasted three minutes and three seconds. This compares to bridesmaids delivering a speech that lasts only 1 minute and 14 seconds, with only 23% of bridesmaids delivering a speech altogether.
Couples spent £1,268 on flowers, £3,787 on food and £2,095 on alcohol this year. Wedding guests have spent an average of £261 at the event, £120 on their outfits including shoes and bags and £54 on a gift for the newlyweds.
Over 632 hours were spent planning weddings and, unfortunately, an additional 266 hours were spent re-planning. The UK has had more than 260,000 weddings cancelled due to the pandemic with a further 142 being cancelled completely at the last minute due to the bride or groom testing positive for Covid.
When it comes to embarrassing moments at weddings, our collective embarrassment threshold is pretty low, with 85% of people claiming they’ve cringed at least once during a wedding. When asked to describe their “cringiest moment” the top five things that caused toe curling and wincing were:
· Terrible, tone deaf speeches (38%)
· Witnessing embarrassing “dad dancing” (25%)
· An extremely awkward first dance (21%)
· Drunken bride and / or groom (16%)
· Bragging about the cost of the wedding (10%)
In light of the findings around this year's weddings, Top10casinos.com has created a joke generator to help relieve wedding guests experiencing those ‘terrible, tone deaf speeches’. The creators said: “Weddings are an incredible occasion and it’s fascinating to see how the UK has celebrated weddings this year. It appears that those three minutes and 38 seconds of the Best Man’s speech can be extremely awkward for the wedding party. We created the joke generator to help these unwitting soles to get some giggles, without the risk of any embarrassing tumbleweed moments.”
