After being declared by the INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission), Senator Aisha Dahiru Ahmed came out as winner of the Adamawa Governorship election.

Also known as Aishatu Binani, she becomes the first woman to take up the position in the Nigerian statutes and has become a ‘flag-barer’ for women in politics in her homeland, and further afield. Coming in as a candidate of the APC (All Progressive Congress), she was declared the winner of the Adamawa governorship election under – all though, it came under controversial circumstances.

A politician, businesswoman, and founder of Binani Group, which houses Binani Printing Press and Binani Air, among others, she was a member of the green chambers representing the Yola North/Yola South/Girei federal constituency local government areas (LGAs), in the Adamawa State, in the North-East geopolitical zone of the west African country.

An alma martar of the University of Southampton, with a background in engineering, she was previously affiliated to the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) before changing affiliation to her role in the All Progressives Congress (APC). And, as the Senator Representing Adamawa Central and APC Gubernatorial candidate, she is known for her diligence and humility.

In her home state of Adamawa, Governor Binani is a beloved figure, whose unique achievement serves as a source of inspiration that makes her a beacon of hope not only to Northern Women - but to women in Nigeria and Africa as a whole after defeating six male candidates, including Nuhu Ribadu, pioneer Chair of the EFCC, to clinch the APC governorship ticket.

Born in 1971, she is one of the seven female senators in the 9th Assembly, representing the Adamawa Central senatorial district. In delivering her acceptance speech as Adamawa Governor-Elect, Governor Binani thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for “making history” by ensuring the first elected female governor emerged during his administration.

She said: “President Muhammadu Buhari, you have made history in electing the first female governor in our country Nigeria.

“This would no doubt broaden political participation by encouraging our daughters, sisters, aunties, mothers, and indeed the girl child” to take active part in politics.” INEC declared the Tambuwal Senator-elect for Sokoto South as an exceptional woman who stands tall, as she shatters boundaries to assert her pedigree.

Governor Aisha Dahiru Ahmed becomes one of a group of women who have proven themselves to be intellectually and politically astute, with their achievements resulting from hard work and immense grace.
