Implementation of the fifth and final phase of Barbados’ Control of Inefficient Lighting Act began on January 1 as part of the island’s national energy policy. The regulation was passed in July 2021 and the phased elimination kicked off on January 1, 2022.

“It should be noted that energy efficient lighting could represent about a third of potential savings of electricity for residential, commercial, and public consumers,” the government reported.

These savings have been estimated at between BDS$16.6mn and BDS$30.8mn (US$8.3-15.4mn) annually depending on crude oil prices. It will help us get closer to our country’s goal of becoming a 100% renewable energy and carbon neutral island-state by 2030.”
