The grand final of the Wheelchair Rugby tournament took place at the Arena Champ-de-Mars, pitting Japan against the United States.
The two nations who had met in the group stage saw this match keep the public on the edge of their seats, with the suspense only dissipating in the final quarter. With the Japanese leading by three points, they managed to extend their lead and eventually won 48-41. Yukinobu Ike scored 16 tries in all.
Japan became Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby champions for the first time in its history, after winning bronze in 2016 and 2020. The Americans, on the other hand, lost in the Paralympic final... for the third time in a row.
Earlier in the day, Australia, winners in 2012 and 2016, had beaten Great Britain 50-48 to claim the bronze medal, while hosts France had clinched fifth place with a 53-50 win over Canada. Seventh place in the Paralympic tournament went to Denmark, who beat Germany 56-49.
