From 2025, foreign visitors entering the UK will need to pay £10 to obtain an ETA.
This measure will allow travellers to stay in the UK for up to six months, whether for tourism, family visits, business, or short-term study. The implementation of ETAs will be gradual. From January 8, 2025, non-European travellers, including U.S. citizens, Canadians, and Australians, will need to apply for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) to enter or transit through the UK.
Then, starting April 2, 2025, European citizens will also need an ETA, but they can begin applying on March 5, 2025. An ETA is a mandatory digital authorisation to travel to the UK. It is required for certain citizens based on their nationality and travel plans.
This permit allows visitors to stay in the UK for up to six months for reasons such as:
- Tourism
- Family visits
- Short-term study
- Certain business activities
Additionally, the ETA will be required for transit passengers passing through the UK to other destinations. A full list of countries whose citizens will need an ETA is available on the UK government website.
This new measure aims to strengthen immigration controls while streamlining entry processes into the country. However, it represents a significant change that will affect both occasional travellers and those using the UK as a transit hub.
