UK Athletics has today confirmed it has officially submitted a joint bid with Birmingham City Council to host the European Athletics Championships at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium in 2026.

Working in partnership with Birmingham City Council, UKA hopes to host Europe’s most prestigious European athletics competition, seven years on from hosting the hugely successful European Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow in 2019.

Following a revision to the UK Athletics performance plans and structures, backed by the UKA Performance Management Group and UK Sport, UK Athletics can confirm that the role of Olympic Head Coach – currently held by Christian Malcolm - will be discontinued after this summer’s European Championships in Munich. Other opportunities created as a result of the revised structure will be discussed with him over that period as a number of changes are made.

The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay has now visited 68 nations and territories of the Commonwealth in 253 days, with visits to Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales remaining in the international journey.   

It comes as, today, the Queen’s Baton Relay has completed its journey through the Isle of Man with visits to NSC Athletics Track, Peel Castle and Tynwald Hill.

The British Basketball League has launched its Ambassadors programme, which will see players and staff across the league promote the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle to thousands of school children in local communities across the UK.

The project has been launched as part of the BBL’s ‘Inspires’ initiative, where key members of each of the league’s 10 clubs will visit schools in their local community to tell their stories about their pathway to becoming a professional athlete.

Minjee Lee won the US Women’s Open by four strokes over Mina Harigae at Pine Needles to win the largest pay-out in the history of women’s golf at $1.8 million.

Lee led throughout the final round and shot even-par 71 in significantly tougher conditions compared to the past three days to finish 13-under 271 coming close to the tournament record of 16 under set by Juli Inkster in 1999 at Old Waverly.

The pools for the beach volleyball tournament that will be held at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games have now been confirmed after the draw was officially completed earlier this month. The matches which will be held in a purpose-built venue at Smithfield, in the centre of Birmingham, will take place from 30 July with both the men’s and women’s medal matches being held on Sunday 7 August.
