With so many of us planning trips closer to home, online motorhome insurance price comparison specialist The Insurers has crunched its data to pinpoint where ‘staycationers’ will be setting off from this summer – and the research reveals that footloose retirees are most likely to be hitting the UK’s roads this year.

The results, taken over a 12-month period up to May 2021, show that retirees accounted for a whopping 57 per cent of all quotes processed by The Insurers, followed by HGV drivers and builders, respectively.

The Insurers has also identified the top ten regions for motorhome owners in the U.K. Those in Northern Ireland generated the lion’s share of requests, with Belfast-based customers accounting for 14 per cent of all quotes within the top 10. Staycationers in Sheffield comprised the second largest customer demographic, with 13 per cent of quotes. Birmingham was one of three cities in the Midlands that collectively accounted for 28 per cent of quotes within the top 10. Customers in the UK’s second largest city generated 11 per cent of quotes, with Nottingham taking seventh spot and Stoke-on-Trent taking eighth place with 9 per cent and eight percent respectively.

Another staycation stronghold was Wales, with two of its largest cities, Cardiff and Swansea bagging the fourth and fifth spots with 10 per cent each. A quarter of all quotes in the Top 10 were generated by customers in the South. Portsmouth was the only entry for the South-East, taking sixth place in the rankings with 10 per cent of quotes, followed by Bristol and Exeter in the South-West making up the remaining 15 per cent.

Ed Bevis, Commercial & Marketing Director at The Insurers, said: “With travel overseas still subject to changing coronavirus restrictions, often at short notice, we’re committed to helping staycationers make the most of the UK this summer and autumn. By analysing our data, we have been able to gather a greater understanding of the UK’s regional hotspots for motorhome owners.  With a growing demand for motorhome buyers due to the coronavirus pandemic, our role in saving UK holidaymakers time and money on their motorhome insurance has never been more important.”

“We were really interested to see that the majority of our customers are retirees, hoping to find that ultimate home-away-from-home this year. We also noticed that most of them were based in the north of the country. Of course, we pride ourselves on helping everyone to get out and about with insurance that meets their unique needs so that motorhome owners up and down the country can make the most of the great British outdoors.”

The site remains competitive thanks to its comprehensive broker panel, which includes some of the UK’s best-known insurance providers. This means that The Insurers can provide quotes for every type of motorhome and caravan, regardless of cover requirements.
