Wolverhampton welcomed back the Varsity Sport Festival in collaboration with University College Birmingham and Birmingham Newman University.
Building on the success of last year’s Varsity, this year’s festival, which took place at Walsall Campus earlier this month, experienced an impressive turnout showcasing a 29% increase in student participation. Students from all three universities came together to celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship and competition.
A multitude of activities were offered, including mixed volleyball, men’s basketball and the exciting new additions of pickleball and cheerleading. The event delivered on its promise of an action-packed day filled with friendly rivalries and shared camaraderie.
Natalie Gould, Sport Performance and Development Manager, at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “Our aim with the event this year was to increase the student engagement and develop it into being a student led event which we were able to achieve with the 31 students on placements across the three institutions.
“The atmosphere through the day was electric and the sense of belonging was palpable across students and staff which was matched by the fantastic weather and effort put in by all the staff who enabled the event to take place”. At the end of the festival, the University of Wolverhampton and University College Birmingham ended up tied with 15 points each, while Birmingham Newman University was just three points behind with a total of 12 points.
As students departed, they carried with them memories of a day filled with excitement, new connections and shared experiences.
