A loving family based in Solihull and Coventry, are set to light up the Warwick skyline this month to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society’s vital work.

Ame Chauhan nee Mandair and her family are set to join hundreds of fundraisers uniting against dementia after dark at the charity’s Warwick Glow walk on 25 March 2022 after experiencing the devastating impact of dementia first-hand. She and her family are determined to shine a light on dementia, after losing their beloved father.

“It will be 15 years this March since we lost our beloved dad, Baghail Singh Mandair, to one of the worst diseases any human can experience – vascular dementia. Dementia is often described as the long goodbye, throughout the years of caring we experienced profound grief as dementia took away our dad.

“Sadly, his behaviour also became more and more challenging; it was most difficult for mum, who was with him 24/7. He will forever be in our hearts.

“Having arrived from India in the 60’s dad worked very hard to provide for his family, whilst contributing to the regeneration of the post-war economy in Britain. Before dementia set in, he was an out-going member of the local community, where everyone knew him and loved to be in his company.”

Ame and her family aim to raise hundreds of pounds at the sponsored night walk, continued: “More needs to be done to find a cure and better treatments for dementia. Imagine waking up one day not knowing who you are, where you are and who those around you are?

“The truth is, this could happen to any one of us, or our loved ones at any time. So please sign up to Glow Warwick or donate what you can – your money will make a huge difference to people living with dementia and their loved ones right now.”

Ame and her family will join people of all ages and walking abilities for a colourful 5.5km stroll around Warwick Racecourse. Participants are encouraged to dress in neon, bring glow sticks and sport their brightest outfits to raise funds and awareness for the over 84,000 people living with dementia in the West Midlands.

There’s never been a more important time for West Midlands residents to glow the distance and come together to raise vital funds for life-changing dementia support. Alzheimer’s Society’s services, including the Dementia Connect support line, have been used over six million times since the start of the pandemic but too many people are still facing dementia alone.

Hazel Bayley, Alzheimer’s Services Manager for the West Midlands, said: “We would like to thank Ame and her family and all of our amazing fundraisers who are taking part in a GLOW event this March.

“Warwick Glow is a fabulous opportunity to make memories with family and friends, all while raising money and awareness for the 84,000 people living with dementia in the West Midlands who continue to be disproportionally hit by the pandemic. Nobody should have to face dementia alone without adequate support.

“That’s why we’re urging the people of the West Midlands to shine a light on dementia alongside your family and friends this March and help make a difference in the fight against dementia. Every pound raised will help Alzheimer’s Society provide vital information and support, improve care, fund research and create lasting change for people affected by the condition.”
