As warm weather returns, families across Wolverhampton have a unique opportunity to reclaim their streets for children’s play and community connection through the national ‘Playing Out’ scheme.
The initiative allows residents to apply for temporary road closures of up to three hours, turning quiet streets and cul-de-sacs into safe spaces for children to play freely outside their homes. The City of Wolverhampton Council encourages families to submit applications at least six weeks in advance.
The scheme does not permit closures on main roads or bus routes, focusing instead on peaceful neighbourhoods where children can enjoy the outdoors without traffic concerns. Councillor Obaida Ahmed warmly welcomed the scheme, saying: “Playing Out days are more than just a chance for children to play — they are a powerful way to bring neighbours together, foster community spirit, and create safe environments where families can connect and thrive.”
He added: “These road closures help build strong and healthy communities by encouraging residents from all backgrounds to socialise, support each other, and share in the joy of outdoor play.” Families can choose between applying for a one-off street closure or arranging recurring closures throughout the year, providing flexibility to suit their community’s needs.
For many parents, the chance to see their children safely scooting, cycling, or simply enjoying the fresh air in their own neighbourhood is invaluable. One local mother shared: “Knowing my children can play outside without worrying about traffic is a blessing.
“It’s also brought our street closer — neighbours who barely spoke before are now chatting and watching out for each other.” The ‘Playing Out’ programme is part of Wolverhampton Council’s wider commitment to promoting physical activity, wellbeing, and social cohesion among children and young people.
As summer approaches, this scheme offers more than just playtime — it offers a chance for communities to reconnect and flourish on their own doorsteps. For more information on applying for street closures, residents are encouraged to contact the City of Wolverhampton Council or visit their website.
