A highlight of the recent Japan Mobility Show, the Mazda Vision X-Coupe wowed onlookers with its stunning exterior design and stylish cabin.

On 26 November, nine West Midlands local policing areas targeted uninsured driving in a major one‑day operation in partnership with MIB (Motor Insurers’ Bureau), the not-for-profit that exists to protect people from the devastation of uninsured and hit-and-run drivers.

The day resulted in 66 vehicles seized as they locked down Birmingham and surrounding areas. Data recently released by MIB uncovered that West Midlands postcodes make up a third of the top 15 uninsured driving hotspots for the UK, with B15, B18, B66, B21 and B35 all featuring.

Uninsured driving remains a huge problem in the UK. Every 20 minutes, someone in the UK is impacted by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver, with one person each day suffering life-altering injuries. The issue is estimated to cost the UK economy £1bn every year, including compensation for victims, emergency services, medical costs and loss of productivity.

Uninsured driving is often linked with wider criminal activity including drug running, drink-driving, speeding and money laundering.

This insight shaped the operation that struck across Birmingham, Walsall, Dudley, Solihull, Sandwell, Coventry and Wolverhampton. Officers collaborated across the day to share intel of uninsured vehicles spotted on the road, ensuring non-compliant drivers were unable to avoid the consequences.

Officers used Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), and local intelligence hotspot markers to intercept offenders, backed by MIB’s expertise in uninsured driving prevention and advanced roadside support. Using MIB’s Navigate database, which holds details of all live motor insurance policies, uninsured vehicles were identified instantly and removed from the roads. Nine coordinated operations ran throughout the day, from 8am to 10pm.

The campaign disrupted criminal activity linked to uninsured vehicles, issued multiple fixed penalty notices, and uncovered further offences including licence offences, several vehicles prohibited for being dangerous and arrests for crime and drugs. Genuine mistakes were also flagged, such as motorists failing to update insurers after registering personalised plates, giving drivers the chance to correct errors.

Uninsured drivers receive a £300 fixed penalty notice, six points on their licence, whilst their seized vehicle may even end up crushed. If your case goes to court, you may also receive an unlimited fine and even a driving ban.

Being caught driving uninsured can affect every part of your life – a loss of your independence, an inability to care for dependents (such as taking your children to school), and even affected job prospects as a driving conviction can show up on background searches.

Here are a few easy mistakes worth double-checking:

  • Forgotten when your insurance expires? Check your renewal date today.
  • Assumed your policy auto-renews? Not all do, and expired payment cards can cause lapses.
  • Is your vehicle off the road? Make sure it’s declared SORN with the DVLA.
  • Thought fully comprehensive cover lets you drive someone else’s car? It often doesn’t - check your policy first for coverage and any restrictions.
  • Using your car for work or deliveries on a social-only policy? You’lllikely need commuting, business or hire-and-reward cover

Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Zafar Iqbal MBE, attended the operation, observing first‑hand the collaborative efforts of West Midlands Police and MIB. His presence underscored the importance of tackling uninsured driving at both a community and policy level, and he praised officers for their decisive action in making local roads safer.

Chief Inspector Keeley Bevington from West Midlands Roads Policing Unit, said: “Driving without insurance is a serious risk to everyone on the road.

“If you choose to break the law, you’re not only endangering lives but also jeopardising your own future. Our officers are working around the clock, every single day, to identify uninsured drivers and take action.

“We will find you, we will seize your vehicle, and we will prosecute. The message is simple: stay insured, drive responsibly, and help us keep our roads safe.”

Martin Saunders, Head of Uninsured Driving Prevention at MIB, reinforced the dual goals of enforcement and awareness: “Uninsured driving puts lives at risk and costs the UK economy significantly.

“Some drivers knowingly break the law, while others fall uninsured through simple mistakes like missed payments or failed renewals. These operations show the importance of combining enforcement and awareness, holding offenders to account while helping others correct errors.

“By working with West Midlands Police, we’re making roads safer, disrupting criminal activity, and striving to ensure no well-meaning driver ends up uninsured.”
