A group of talented Year 7 students from Gospel Oak School, based in Tipton and part of the Central Region Schools Trust, have been selected to take part in The Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme – a prestigious national initiative that introduces pupils to university-style learning and academic research.
The Brilliant Club is a nationally recognised charity working to increase fair access to highly selective universities. The Scholar’s Programme is a prestigious national initiative that introduces pupils to university-style learning and academic research.
It connects students with PhD researchers who lead them through a series of university-style tutorials on advanced topics beyond the school curriculum. As part of the experience, students will develop essential skills such as critical thinking, academic writing, and independent research—building a strong foundation for future success in higher education.
Hayley Nutting, Vice Principal at Gospel Oak School, shared her pride in the school’s involvement: “We are delighted that our students have been chosen to take part in The Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme.
“It’s an incredible opportunity for them to stretch their academic abilities and gain confidence in their potential to progress to higher education.” Throughout their participation in the programme, students will complete a challenging assignment assessed at a level above their current key stage, giving them an authentic taste of university-level study.
“They will also visit a top UK university – an experience designed to raise aspirations and open their eyes to future possibilities. One of the students taking part in the Scholars Programme said: “I’m really excited to be part of the Scholars Programme.
“I’m interested to learn more about new topics and find out what studying at university might be like. It’s a great chance to challenge myself and try something different.”
Stephen Brownlow, Principal at Gospel Oak School, commented on the school’s participation, saying: “Opportunities like this are invaluable in helping our students realise what they are capable of.
“We believe strongly in raising aspirations and nurturing ambition, and The Brilliant Club provides a perfect platform for both. We’re incredibly proud of our Year 7s for stepping up to this challenge with such enthusiasm and maturity.”
