Walsall College Music students entertained guests at Holiday Inn Walsall’s recent refurb launch party. The hotel, based at junction 10 of the M6, has recently undergone a refurb and held a launch event on Thursday, 11th February to unveil its new look to clients, residents and the public. Entertainment was provided by the college’s Level 3 Music students who performed a rendition of classic songs by The Beatles and Eric Clapton.

Curriculum Manager for Music at Walsall College, Rick Benton, said: “The students’ performances went down incredibly well with guests at the launch and we are delighted that they were given this chance to showcase their talents.

“As well as learning the technical musical skills on their course, it’s essential that students build up their experience of performing to different audiences. We are always exploring new opportunities to aid their development and ensure that by the time they leave us they are fully prepared to enter the music industry.”

Current students, Jonathan Murphy, Kyle Mcfarlane, Lucy Pilmore and Matthew Somerfield were joined on stage by professional singer and guitarist Lauren Baker, who studied Music at the college from 2011 to 2013.

After completing the BTEC Level 3 course, Lauren got a job performing on board cruise ships and has since travelled the world entertaining passengers. She said: “The college really helped me to launch my music career and I keep in contact with the lecturers as often as I can. I’m currently on leave for a few weeks and when I heard about this performance I was keen to support current students and pass on any advice I could about my experience in the industry.”

There are still places left on the college’s Music courses starting in September. To apply visit www.walsallcollege.ac.uk or attend the Open Day on Thursday 17th March 4-7pm.
