Global Reggae stars UB40 have officially opened the Brian Travers Music Room at a Birmingham primary school, in honour of their late bandmate - a passionate supporter of music education for children and young people. During a special ceremony at St Edward's Catholic School to unveil the new resource, founding members Jimmy Brown, Robin Campbell, Earl Falconer, and Norman Hassan paid tribute to their friend and colleague, who passed away after a battle with cancer in 2019.

A recruitment drive is coming to West Midlands to encourage young people starting out in the world of work and those considering switching jobs to find out more about life as a teacher.

The free Get Into Teaching event aims to inspire more people in the area to join a profession that helps shape the lives of the next generation. The event, from 10am to 2.30pm on Saturday 1st July at Birmingham Conference and Events Centre, Hill Street, Birmingham, B5 4EW, is open to everyone – from the career curious, to those ready to apply – and will be packed with information and advice on the steps to becoming a teacher.

Primary school pupils from across the West Midlands region have come together to celebrate and share their initiatives and ideas for healthier lifestyles, as a result of taking part in the Health for Life programme.

Students and teachers, from eight schools, currently participating in the Health for Life initiative met at St. Andrew’s Stadium to demonstrate the wide-ranging and sustainable activities around growing food, healthy eating and exercise, that they have developed since joining the scheme last autumn. Children at New Oscott Primary School in Sutton Coldfield showcased their new cooking skills by creating homemade pancakes with a sweet and savoury twist for other students and teachers to enjoy, which included flavours including strawberry and vanilla, raisin and lemon and cheese and chive.

The University of Wolverhampton has appointed an award-winning academic to the role of Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange. Professor Prashant Pillai, MBE, was successful in securing the position, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role. The new position forms part of the University’s newly structured Offices of the Vice-Chancellor and will lead efforts to continue to grow and improve the institute’s world-class research.  

A school in Harwich has received a donation of hedgehog homes, hedgehog food and two small feeding bowls from a local housebuilder, in an effort to contribute to the preservation of the species.  

Developer Barratt and David Wilson Homes donated the resources to All Saints' Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, located near to the housebuilder’s Languard View development in Dovercourt. According to the State of Britain’s Hedgehogs 2022 report published by wildlife charities People's Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS), hedgehog populations have declined by between 30% to 75% across different parts of the countryside since 2000.

Researchers at the University of Wolverhampton have been recognised for their contribution to outstanding scholarly research after being announced as the winners of the Emerald Literati Award 2022. 
 
For almost 30 years the Emerald Literati Awards have celebrated and rewarded the outstanding contributions of authors and reviewers. The team of researchers were announced as winners after a successful collaboration project found that a 3D printing material kills 100% of the Covid-19 virus.
